Purpose

The 12-month general pharmacy practice residency at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center (MBMC) builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligibility for board certification, and eligibility for PGY2 pharmacy residency training.

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center (MBMC) is an acute care, community-based hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. With 25 full-time pharmacists and 28 non-pharmacist staff, our pharmacy services extend throughout our 440-bed facility that admits approximately 21,000 hospital patients and performs more than 220,000 outpatient procedures each year.

Resident Responsibilities

  • Improve patient care, safety and economic impact relating to medication use in multiple settings.
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary patient care rounds (unit-based and medical teaching service).
  • Assess and improve medication appropriateness through utilization of evidence-based medicine.
  • Manage physician-initiated pharmacy consults including:
    • Nutrition Support
    • Diabetes Management
    • Pharmacokinetics
    • Renal Dosing
    • Patient Education
    • Anticoagulant Monitoring
    • Drug Information
  • Assist in precepting students on rotations and through didactic and application-based classes.
  • Attend and provide medication-related support during an emergency response.
  • Identify medication errors and assess for practice change.
  • Display professional, ethical responsibility for one’s practice.
  • Assess for practice improvements in drug distribution services.
  • Central pharmacy responsibilities: order verification, narcotics, sterile compounding, medication profile review, clinical pharmacy consults, medication room inspections, etc.

Staffing Requirements

Each resident is required to work rotating weekends. On weekends for the first two months after orientation, residents will provide order verification/staffing in the main pharmacy. Residents will be required to work a shift in the central pharmacy one afternoon every week the resident does not work the weekend. Afterwards, residents will be expected to cover clinical consults with a specialist on assigned weekends. Residents work each Saturday and Sunday during their assigned weekend.

Pharmacy Staff and Preceptors

Residents are provided the opportunity to train alongside clinical pharmacy preceptors who have expansive educational backgrounds and diverse experiences to enrich their learning and hands-on experiences.

Residents also select a professional mentor from this preceptor group. The mentor assists the resident with establishing a plan for the year based on career goals, previous experiences, areas for growth and progression throughout the year. The mentor is available to help guide the resident as needed throughout the resident year relating to projects, presentations or career choices.

Application Requirements and How to Apply

Students eligible for a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited school are required to submit all requested documents through the PhORCAS application system. Required documents include a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, Doctor of Pharmacy transcript and 3 PhORCAS professional letters of recommendation. The candidate must also be eligible for licensure in the state of Mississippi, have U.S. citizenship or a permanent VISA, and be available for an interview.
